The Plastic Club in Philadelphia is a wonderful resource for practicing life and figure drawing skills. They host seven open studio events per week, with live models at each, some clothed and some nude. I’m hoping to make it here as often as possible every week to take advantage the opportunities they provide. As a member of the club, each session is only $7.00 for three hours, for non-members, the fee is $8.00. The three hour session that I attended featured four 5-minute poses, a 1-hour pose, and a 40-minute pose. Other sessions don’t necessarily follow the same format, some featuring a 3-hour long pose.
At this session I worked with compressed charcoal. Many of the other artists I watch and follow discourage heavy outlines, which I can see myself doing in this piece. Also, I struggled with the gesture since her body is turning away from view, twisting her upper torso towards me and her lower torso away from me. Despite having an hour with this pose, I’m obviously struggling with shading and I didn’t even attempt to try any detail in the hands or feet. Proportion is also off – her breast is too large for the size of her head, arms, etc.
I loved the pose and thought it was a challenging gesture. This was also one of the first times I attempted to indicate the lines in the material over the chair. Something that proved more challenging than I originally thought.
